The film

McG's Charlie's Angels, released November 3, 2000, reinvented the 1970s series as a glossy, high-energy action comedy. It was a major box-office success, grossing about $264 million worldwide against a $93 million budget.

Her Angel

Liu plays Alex Munday, one of the three private investigators who work for the unseen Charlie, alongside Cameron Diaz's Natalie and Drew Barrymore's Dylan. The role placed her at the center of a studio tentpole and let her play action, comedy and glamour at once.

The sequel

All three returned for Charlie's Angels: Full Throttle in 2003, confirming the trio as a franchise. For Liu, the two films bracketed exactly the period when she moved from television favorite to internationally recognized film actress.

What it meant

Coming off Ally McBeal, Charlie's Angels put Liu in a global blockbuster as one of three equal leads, a rare position at the time, and set up the run that would include O-Ren Ishii in Kill Bill the same year as the sequel.
