Joan WatsonA character guide · fact-checked September 2026
O-Ren Ishii is the role people quote, but Joan Watson is the one Lucy Liu lived in the longest. For seven seasons and 154 episodes of CBS's Elementary, she reinvented the most famous sidekick in detective fiction. Here is the character, explained.
Who is Joan Watson?
Joan Watson is a former surgeon who walked away from medicine after a patient died on her table. When Elementary begins, she is working as a sober companion, and Sherlock Holmes's father hires her to help his son stay clean after rehab. What starts as a six-week contract becomes a partnership that anchors the whole series.
From sober companion to detective
The pleasure of the show is watching Joan's role change. She arrives to keep Sherlock sober and stays because she turns out to have the instincts of a great investigator. He notices, and offers to train her. Over the seasons she goes from apprentice, to full working partner, to a consulting detective the NYPD calls in on her own name. By the end she is not Sherlock's assistant. She is his equal.
A Watson reimagined
Casting Liu recast Dr. Watson as a woman, and the show refused the obvious move of turning the partnership into a romance. Joan and Sherlock are colleagues and close friends, and the writing keeps them there on purpose. It let Liu build one of television's most grounded, adult professional relationships, and gave the character a life of her own rather than a role defined by the lead.
Behind the camera too
Liu's years on Elementary were also where she became a working television director, stepping behind the camera on the show while starring in it. Her directing career is covered in its own guide.
Why the role mattered
Seven seasons is a rare commitment, and Joan Watson gave Liu a lead role that aged and deepened on screen in a way films rarely allow. Alongside Ling Woo and O-Ren Ishii, it is one of the three performances she is most identified with, and the one that showed she could carry a network drama for the better part of a decade.
