Of all Lucy Liu's roles, none is as iconic as O-Ren Ishii — the ice-cold crime boss of Kill Bill, and the performance that won her an MTV Movie Award for Best Villain. Here is the character, explained.
Who is O-Ren Ishii?
In Quentin Tarantino's Kill Bill: Vol. 1 (2003), O-Ren Ishii — code name "Cottonmouth" — is a member of the Deadly Viper Assassination Squad who, after the film's opening massacre, rises to become the supreme leader of the Tokyo yakuza. She is the first target The Bride hunts on her rampage of revenge, and the most regal and controlled of the Vipers.
The anime backstory
O-Ren's origin is told not in live action but in a striking animated sequence — Tarantino used anime because the material, the murder of her parents by a yakuza boss when she was a child, was too extreme to show directly. Half-Japanese, half-Chinese-American and born on a US military base in Tokyo, she takes her revenge as a child and grows into one of the world's deadliest assassins.
The House of Blue Leaves
Her showdown with The Bride is the film's centerpiece. After The Bride cuts through O-Ren's army, the Crazy 88, and her bodyguard Gogo Yubari, the two women face off in the snow garden of the House of Blue Leaves — a hushed, beautiful duel that closes the film's first great movement. O-Ren's final line acknowledges the weapon that beat her: a Hattori Hanzo sword.
Why the role mattered
O-Ren gave Liu one of the great screen-villain entrances of the 2000s and a genuinely iconic action role at a time when few Asian-American women were cast as the most powerful person in the room. It remains one of the performances she is most identified with, two decades on.
